Graduate Student Assistantships Available
Winter 2024

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce the availability of graduate assistant (GA) positions. Assistantships offer students the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge while receiving financial support. GAs serve as a support-person to a faculty’s teaching assignments and/or help faculty on their research. However, the GAs will NOT perform the teaching duties for the faculty.

The application process for the GA positions for the winter semester of 2024 is now open.

Qualifications

Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for the assistantship positions. Due to the limited availability of the funds, the granting of assistantships is a competitive process. Meeting these criteria do NOT guarantee awards. To qualify, interested students:

Must enrolled in the graduate programs (Master of Arts in Economics, Master of Arts in Financial Economics and Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics) in the Department of Economics.
A minimum of 3.5 GPA in the graduate program.
Full-time student status in the awarding semester.

Deep knowledge in Financial Economics

Financial Economics focuses on the study of economics and financial principles related to U.S. and international financial systems. Earning your Master of Arts in Financial Economics provides deep knowledge of history, institutions and world economy. The program addresses moral and ethical issues related to the field of finance.

Financial Economics defines the management structure of a business, explores industry-specific trends, and breaks down the fundamentals of risk and return evaluation for investors. Earning your M.A. in Financial Economics from Detroit Mercy teaches you investment strategies while measuring prices, interest rates, money flows and the financial markets. This program compares financial instruments relevant in today’s faced-paced world.

The program includes some data analytics courses (electives) that students can use for advancement in the job market. A Master of Arts in Financial Economics gives students adaptability to the labor market and adds an additional layer of analytical skills beyond a typical business-oriented finance degree.

Earning your Master of Arts in Financial Economics provides deep knowledge of monetary and fiscal policy, markets, and world economy. Individuals with graduate degrees in financial economics can be found in business, finance and government as managers, financial analysts, financial advisors and policy advisors.

While you are a student completing courses relevant to the world of finances, you will also have opportunities to work with expert financiers as instructors and research leads. Requirements for Acceptance into the Online Graduate Degree Economics Program*

An undergraduate degree in economics or business administration is preferred.
An overall grade point average of 3.0 or better.
