The Second Major
Choosing philosophy as a second major is a wise choice. Your first major likely raises questions about the values or methodology of that discipline, and its relationship to other disciplines and the larger world.
These questions pertaining to the fundamentals of a discipline are not usually explored in a rigorous fashion by the discipline itself. Such questions are philosophical in nature, and so are best explored by a philosophically-trained mind.
Philosophy questions the unstated assumptions, methodologies, and the various modes of assessing evidence used by other disciplines. Through this questioning, philosophy can help deepen and broaden your training in your first major, which can only better prepare you for a distinguished career in your primary area of study.
Double majors are common in the department, and students frequently pair a major in philosophy with majors in English, political science, history, mathematics, or computer science. However, a philosophy major is compatible with a wide variety of other majors, and the Philosophy Department at UDM can help you design a philosophy major that best compliments your primary area of study.
