Nancy G. Calley, Ph.D., LPC

Dr. Calley specializes in the clinical treatment of juvenile sex offenders. She is currently the Principal Researcher & Project Coordinator on a multi-year federal Bureau of Justice-funded initiative to evaluate and improve the Wayne County. juvenile sex offender system. Dr. Calley's publications include the assessment and treatment of juvenile sex offenders, clinical program development and implementation, ethical issues in counseling, and professional identity in counseling. Her primary research areas focus on juvenile sex offender management, comprehensive clinical program development for court-involved adolescents and families, and the practical application of ethics. She has worked with marginalized individuals in the juvenile justice, child welfare, and public mental health systems over the last two decades as a clinician, clinical director, and administrator, and continues to be actively involved in southeastern Michigan.

Dr. Calley teaches counseling theories, program development in counseling, working with trauma survivors, counselor supervision, and the internship in counseling. She is the Ethics Chair of the Michigan Counseling Association and the past president of the Michigan Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors. Dr. Calley holds an MA in Counseling and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Wayne State University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She joined the University in 2002.

John T. Franklin, Ph.D., NCC

Dr. Franklin is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of addictive disorders and co-occurring mental illnesses. He has directed the addiction studies program since its inception in 1978. He teaches drug effects, theories of addiction, group methods, family systems, qualitative research and compulsive gambling. His publications deal with chemical dependence among women, alternative education as preventive of substance abuse, treatment outcomes for adolescents and their families, and steroid dependence among male weight-lifters. His current interests are sexual addiction and the confluence of spirituality and psychotherapy. In 2002 he received the Distinguished Professor Award from his colleagues at UDM. Dr. Franklin holds a B.A. in philosophy from St. Mary of the LakeSeminary, an S.T.L. in theology from the Gregorian University, an M.A. in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois Springfield and a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Lawrence teaches school counseling, counseling skills, group counseling, and introduction to counseling. His publications and research interests involve the use of Reality Therapy with individuals with developmental disabilities and exploring various counseling modalities as they relate to school guidance programs. Dr. Lawrence believes that as a mental health professional, the school counselor is a valuable part of a student's educational experience. He works to support the development of guidance programs in schools. He has over thirteen years experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and as a school counselor in southeastern Michigan. Dr. Lawrence earned his MA in Counseling from the University of Detroit Mercy and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision from Wayne State University. He is a licensed professional counselor and licensed school counselor. Dr. Lawrence joined the University in 2005.

Dr. Pickover teaches counseling & human development, testing and evaluation, research methods, and the practicum in counseling. Dr. Pickover's publications and research interests include applied behavioral methods, counseling children and families, and attachment theory. She received a Master's of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision from Oakland University. Dr. Pickover has 18 years experience working in child welfare as a counselor, case manager, clinical supervisor, and trainer. She joined the University in 2004.

Dr. Wehmer teaches courses in the assessment and treatment of chemical dependence and qualitative methods in research. Dr. Wehmer's professional interests include counseling interventions for addicted populations and clinical treatment for adult sex offenders. He consults professionally with numerous local substance abuse agencies. Dr. Wehmer received an award for long-term service to the University. He holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He joined the University in 1980.

Ms. Williams is Administrative Assistant to the Department of Counseling and Addiction Studies. Ms. Williams attended Eastern Michigan University and has over fifteen years office administration experience. In addition to working for four major cultural institutions in the Detroit Area (Henry Ford Museum, Motown Historical Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts and Museum of African American History), she served in the United States Marine Corps during Operation Desert Storm. Just prior to coming to UDM, Ms. Williams was Community Outreach Coordinator for the Idaho Black History Museum in Boise , Idaho.
