Post Degree Programs

Description

Undergraduate, post-degree, and graduate students who are interested in teacher certification must have passed all three components of the Michigan Basic Skills Test (MBST) in order to be admitted to the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) as an education student. Students who have not passed all three components of the MBST prior to admission will be permitted to register for one term as "pre-education" students, but must pass the MBST in order to register for a second term.

Post degree students are admitted to the College of Liberal Arts & Education to begin a teacher preparation program if their undergraduate cumulative GPA is 2.5 or above. They are given a plan of study that includes general education and content studies.

Upon completion of the admissions process, candidates can receive admission, admission on probation, or denial of admission. Any candidate who is given a probationary admission is given one semester in which to increase her/his GPA to a 2.5 minimum. A faculty advisor will work with the candidate to identify the nature of the difficulties the candidate is experiencing, and will make the student aware of assistance that the University can provide and other resources, that can help to resolve the difficulties. Those who raise their GPA to the required level are admitted; those who do not are dismissed from the program.

The College of Liberal Arts & Education offers programs which lead to a:

Post Degree Elementary Certification
Post Degree Secondary Certification

The College of Liberal Arts & Education also offers a teacher education program for individuals who possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. The program may be pursued on a part-time, late afternoon or evening basis with the exception of the student teaching requirement which is a 15-week semester of full-day attendance. Passing MTTC Content Areas Test scores are required prior to the beginning of the term in which a student has registered for student teaching. Content Areas Tests correspond to the areas of endorsement at the appropriate level of certification (Elementary or Secondary), in which a student intends to become certified.  Students in the post-degree program must satisfy all teacher certification program requirements.
